"Food, Inc." - Apr 26th

This lunch has been brought to you by. . . .
The unspoken mantra of consumer culture may as well be Bigger, better, faster, more! The American business sector never stops innovating when it comes to meeting customer demandbut just how many innovators have gotten to our food before we do?
Fruits, vegetables, and livestock still carry connotations of a farmer waking up with the roosters crow to raise fresh, organic life in the fresh, organic air. The pastoral image masks an intensely mechanized, capitalistic system that is as hell-bent on efficiency, revenue, and competitive advantage as any other industry. The nations largest food production and distribution companies have amassed enough influence over the years to control every single stage in the lifespan of our purportedly wholesome ingredientsand their wallets may be too big for our stomachs.
Director Robert Kenner connects with Fast Food Nation author Eric Schlosser and a host of expertsfarmers, professors, corporate leaders, politicians, and advocatesto trace just some of the innumerable effects of commercial food production. He casts a wide net, examining everything from chemical applications to the treatment of animals; from sanitation practices to workers rights; from disease epidemics to legal battles. At the core of the study is a call to viewers to demand the details of what they put in their mouths. Needless to say, FOOD, INC. will give you plenty of food for thought.

"03Mar2009_231029-adventureland.jpg
A funky, self-professedly funtastic Pennsylvania amusement park, Adventureland appears to be the bane of recent college graduate James Brennans (Jesse Eisenberg) existence. He previously had big plans to spend the summer on a life-altering trek through Europe that would initiate him into real adult life. But when his family suffers an economic downturn in the middle of the Reagan 80s, James only summer trip is straight to a minimum wage job manning a game booth so existentially bankrupt, no one is even allowed to win the "giant-ass" stuffed panda. Welcome to ADVENTURELAND, where the worst job imaginable is about to inadvertently turn into the summer that changes everything."

" If the first order of business for any self-respecting film noir is a dead body with a story to tell, Ole Bornedal is quick to oblige. But rest assured that this twisted, visually energized genre... If the first order of business for any self-respecting film noir is a dead body with a story to tell, Ole Bornedal is quick to oblige. But rest assured that this twisted, visually energized genre bender has no further use for custom, and Just Another Love Story is anything but.
Jonas is a crime photographer, a family man, and a generally beleaguered resident of suburban malaise until hes involved in a car accident that leaves a stranger, Julia, unconscious in the hospital. Curiosity compels Jonas to visit her, but when Julias family mistakes him for her boyfriend, Sebastian (whom theyve never met), Jonas readily steps into the role. His pretense would be short lived, but Julia awakens with amnesia and, enlivened by the new identity hes inherited, Jonas maintains the deception. Of course, memories return. And so do boyfriends.
Playing with flashbacks, employing a linearly fractured narrative, and freely manipulating noirs standard devices and archetypes, Bornedals dexterity with genre conventions is on full display here. Constantly aware of whats predictable, he heads in the opposite direction. Moreover, he latches onto a completely universal impulse--the desire to reinvent ourselves. But fatalism rules in noir, and the cruel irony--tailor made for that dead body--is that living a life that isnt yours is a dangerous game, an illusory freedom. The truth always comes knocking at your door."

"Gomorrah" - Mar 15th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, Mar 15th at 6:30pm for Gomorrah at the Kendall Square Cinema . Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"Director Matteo Garrone's epic, mesmerizing tour-de-force about Naples' infamous Camorra was a critical sensation at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prize. A sweeping drama with documentary-like realism, Gomorrah explores the mafia's vice-like hold on all aspects of life in the regions of Naples and Caserta (where the film was shot), as well as its creeping influence on international business and government. The film weaves together five stories of ordinary people forced to reckon with the heavy hand of the Camorra, where every decision, great or small, is a matter of life and death. Garrone's (The Embalmer) ambitious and powerful breakthrough film sheds light on a shadow organization that rules by fear and unsparing violence, tacitly fostered from above and abroad by greed, corruption and complicity. Based on Roberto Saviano's explosive international bestseller, which made him a target for mob threats. (Fully subtitled)"

"Serbis" - Mar 1st
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, Mar 1st at 7:30pm for Serbis at the Brattle Theatre . Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
The visionary Filipino director Brillante Mendoza envisions a crumbling soft-core porn palace as an allegory for the labyrinthine socio-political history of the Philippines in this chaotic, colorful and engaging film. Multiple generations of the Pineda family live in and operate a run-down movie house, ironically named The Family, which shows dated sex films and offers a discreet meeting place for male hustlers and their patrons. As the members of the family and their employees go about their daily activities, we get a glimpse of how they suffer and deal with each others sins and vices. Preoccupied with their personal demons, the family seems oblivious that, inside their cinema, another kind of business is going on between the serbis (service) boys and their customers.
Harking back to another Brattle favorite, Tsai Ming-Liangs Goodbye Dragon Inn, The Family Theatre is as much a character in the film as any human. Unlike Tsais feature however, which depicted a cinema on its final, dismal day, SERBIS seethes with life from the cranky employees, to the various marital problems reflected in all generations of the Pinedas, to the glimpses of explicit sex behind the scenes, to two mind-bending chase scenes through the maze-like guts of the cinema.

"François (played by François Bégaudeau, who wrote the screenplay based on his own experiences) and his fellow teachers prepare for a new year at a high school in a tough neighborhood. Armed with the best intentions, they brace themselves to not let discouragement stop them from trying to give the best education to their students. Cultures and attitudes often clash in the classroom, a microcosm of contemporary France. As amusing and inspiring as the teenaged students can be, their difficult behavior can still jeopardize any teacher's enthusiasm for the low-paying job. François insists on an atmosphere of respect and diligence. Neither stuffy nor severe, his extravagant frankness often takes the students by surprise. But his classroom ethics are put to the test when his students begin to challenge his methods... Winner of the prestigious Palme d'Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film. Directed by Laurent Cantet (Heading South, Time Out)."

"Writer/director John Patrick Shanley brings his Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play to the screen as a gripping story about the quest for truth, the forces of change and the devastating consequences of blind justice in an age defined by moral conviction. It's 1964, St. Nicholas in the Bronx. A vibrant, charismatic priest, Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman), is trying to upend the school's strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep), the iron-gloved Principal who believes in the power of fear and discipline. The winds of political change are sweeping through the community, and indeed, the school has just accepted its first black student, Donald Muller. But when Sister James (Amy Adams), a hopeful innocent, shares with Sister Aloysius her guilt-inducing suspicion that Father Flynn is paying too much personal attention to Donald, Sister Aloysius sets off on a personal crusade to unearth the truth and to expunge Flynn from the school. Now, without a shard of proof besides her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius locks into a battle of wills with Father Flynn which threatens to tear apart the community with irrevocable consequence."

Look for Michael wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"I was born under unusual circumstances." And so begins 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,' adapted from the 1920s story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards: a man, like any of us, who is unable to stop time. We follow his story, set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918 to the 21st century, following his journey that is as unusual as any man's life can be. Directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett with Taraji P. Henson, Tilda Swinton, Jason Flemyng, Elias Koteas and Julia Ormond, Benjamin Button is a grand tale of a not-so-ordinary man and the people and places he discovers along the way, the loves he finds, the joys of life and the sadness of death, and what lasts beyond time.

Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"For three years after being forced from office, Nixon remained silent. But in summer 1977, the steely, cunning former commander-in-chief agreed to sit for one all-inclusive interview to confront the questions of his time in office and the Watergate scandal that ended his presidency. Nixon surprised everyone in selecting Frost as his televised confessor, intending to easily outfox the breezy British showman and secure a place in the hearts and minds of Americans. Likewise, Frost's team harbored doubts about their boss's ability to hold his own. But as cameras rolled, a charged battle of wits resulted. Would Nixon evade questions of his role in one of the nation's greatest disgraces? Or would Frost confound critics and bravely demand accountability from the man who'd built a career out of stonewalling? Over the course of their encounter, each man would reveal his own insecurities, ego and reserves of dignity--ultimately setting aside posturing in a stunning display of unvarnished truth."

"From director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Millions) and screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty) comes this darkly funny rags-to-riches story that was a breakout hit at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is the story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. "Different black-and-white animation techniques tell several scary stories. There's a story of a teenage boy who meets the wrong girl. Another tale deals with a small community where people disappear and are never seen again. Then there's the narrative of a little Japanese girl who suffers from horrible nightmares followed by a tale where a man doesn't get the rest he hoped for in an old not-so-abandoned house. These stories are connected by the story about a man with a devilish smile and four enormous dogs from hell and by a woman's monologue about her fears."

"Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story" - Oct 26th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, Oct 26th at 7:15pm for Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story at the Coolidge Corner Theatre . Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"Boogie Man is a surprising look at Lee Atwater, the blues-playing rogue whose rambunctious rise from the South to Chairman of the GOP made him a household name. He mentored Karl Rove and George W. Bush and played a crucial role in the elections of Reagan and George H.W. Bush. He wrote the Republican Partys winning playbook which the McCain campaign is currently using.
In eye-opening interviews with Atwater's closest friends and enemies, Boogie Man re-examines Atwaters crucial role in the remaking of the Republican Party. To Democrats offended by his cutthroat style (to say nothing of the 1988 Willie Horton controversy), Atwater was a political assassin dubbed by one Congresswoman "the most evil man in America." But to most Republicans he remains a hero for his deep understanding of the American heartland, his expert manipulation of the media, and his unapologetic vision of politics as war. Director Stefan Forbes offers a timely documentary for this election year as he examines the charming yet Machiavellian godfather of the modern negative political campaign."

"Whether you love him or hate him, there is no question that George W. Bush is one of the most controversial public figures in recent memory. In an unprecedented undertaking, acclaimed director Oliver Stone is bringing the life of our 43rd President to the big screen as only he can. W takes viewers through Bushs eventful life -- his struggles and triumphs, how he found both his wife and his faith, and of course the critical days leading up to Bushs decision to invade Iraq."

When he's not pulling this stunt, Victor cruises sexual addiction recovery workshops for action, visits his addled mom, and spends his days working at a colonial theme park.

When Jasira's mother sends her to Houston to live with her strict Lebanese father, she quickly learns that her new neighbors find her and her father a curiosity. Worse, her budding womanhood makes her traditional and hot-tempered father uncomfortable. Lonely in this new environment, Jasira seeks friendship and acceptance from her neighbors Mr. Vuoso, an Army reservist, and Melina, a meddling but caring expectant mother.
Thrown into an unfamiliar suburban world, Jasira must confront racism and hypocrisy at home and at school - and at the same time struggle to make sense of her raging hormones and newfound sexuality. Her boyfriend, Thomas, though a few years older, provides some comfort - but even that relationship causes problems when her father discovers that Thomas is black. Surrounded by adults who are just as lost as she is, Jasira yearns for understanding, even amidst often brutal acts.

Fifty years on, VERTIGO has lost none of its power as a gripping thriller, but as we know in our Dr.-Phil-enlightened age, it's also an exploration of some serious untreated emotional disorders. Stewart doesn't play against type so much as he burrows into his persona to newfound and frightening depths as a San Francisco detective who finds himself obsessed by (at least) two versions of the seductive Kim Novak.
(And if you want to make it a double-feature, be sure to catch Rear Window at 4:30pm!)

Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
On August 7, 1974 a young Frenchman named Philippe Petit stepped out on a wire illegally rigged between New York's Twin Towers, then the world's tallest buildings. After nearly an hour dancing on the wire, he was arrested, taken for psychological evaluation and brought to jail. Petit spent eight months in New York planning the execution of the coup. Aided by a team of friends and accomplices, he had to find a way to bypass the World Trade Center's security; smuggle the heavy steel cable and rigging equipment into the towers; pass the wire between the two rooftops; anchor the wire and tension it to withstand the winds and the swaying of the buildings. The rigging was done by night in complete secrecy. At 7:15 AM, Philippe took his first step on the high wire 1,350 feet above the sidewalks of Manhattan. James Marsh's documentary brings Petit's extraordinary adventure to life through the testimony of Philippe himself, and some of the co-conspirators who helped him create the unique and magnificent spectacle that became known as "the artistic crime of the century." Music by Michael Nyman.

But when Dale becomes the only witness to a murder by a crooked cop and the city's most dangerous drug lord, he panics and dumps his roach of Pineapple Express at the scene. Dale now has another reason to visit Saul: to find out if the weed is so rare that it can be traced back to him. And it is. He temporarily escapes his memories during the day by immersing himself completely in his work as a pediatrician. Outside of that, only the friendship he has formed with Hélène Perkins saves him from total isolation from the rest of the world. "Danger Diabolik" - Jul 27th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, Jul 27th at 7:30pm for Danger Diabolik at the Brattle Theatre . Look for Howard wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
This rarely screened super-thief flick features B-movie fave John Phillip Law in a starring role as Diabolik, an international man of mystery who steals from the rich to well keep it for himself. Yes, Diabolik is a thief, pure-and-simple, but he is perhaps one of the hippest robbers ever committed to celluloid. Sort of like To Catch A Thief on steroids, DANGER: DIABOLIK features great locations, beautiful women, fabulous riches, and a cop who will stop at nothing to catch his man. Directed by the immortal Italian schlock master Mario Bava and featuring a devilishly charming performance by Law, this movie is a colorful, mod confection not to be missed on the big screen.

Look for Dan wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
The Animation Show is back with an all-new collection of incredible independent animation! This year Mike Judge has gathered together over two dozen of his favorite funny short films from around the world. It's a groundbreaking program of eye-popping adult animation from tomorrow's next great animators. This isnt a dirty adults only animation show but the program does skew towards a mature audience with some explicit language and adult subject matter. This year The Animation Show has commissioned some truly amazing new work from four incredible artists. Kicking things off is the uber-talented Joel Trussell with an epic viking Animation Show Intro. Australian animator Dave Carter debuts three new commissioned shorts with the hilarious Psychotown. Dave continues his collaboration with the comedy team The Nice Guys for a blend of cut out and stop-motion animation. Also featured is stop-motion superstar PES, who has been an Animation Show regular the last two tours and returns this year with the instructional cooking treat Western Spaghetti. This is PESs most complex film to date and an instant classic! The program also features the first commissioned short film from the commercial design team Smith and Foulkes (known for their award-winning commercial spots for Coke and Motorola) with the CG tale This Way Up. The piece centers around two undertakers working hard to lay the dead to rest. Like past tours this new program is packed with festival favorites and premieres. This year The Animation Show is the first to theatrically share the work of Steve Dildarian (new HBO series "The Life and Times of Tim" debuting in September). Another highlight is a collection of films never seen in the U.S. from the prestigious French animation college Gobelins, featuring the shorts Burning Safari, Cocotte Minute, Voodoo and Blind Spot. Returning this year are animation greats Bill Plympton with the premiere of Hot Dog, Corky Quakenbush with the irreverent Yompi and Georges Schizgebels gorgeous Jeu"!

"More scrupulously reported than your average Michael Moore film but every bit as entertaining." - Peter Debruge, Variety
From the producers of BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE and FAHRENHEIT 9/11 comes a new film that unflinchingly explores America's win-at-all-cost culture through the lens of a personal journey. Blending comedy and pathos, BIGGER, STRONGER, FASTER* is a collision of pop culture and first-person narrative, with a diverse cast including US Congressmen, professional athletes, medical experts and everyday gym rats.
At its heart, this is the story of director Christopher Bell and his two brothers, who grew up idolizing muscular giants like Hulk Hogan, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and who went on to become members of the steroid-subculture in an effort to realize their American dream. "

SPECIAL DRIVE-IN TRIP - "Speed Racer"
The Boston Sunday Night Film Club will be making a special trip to the Mendon Drive-in in Mendon, MA this Sunday, May 11th. We will be seeing "Speed Racer" at 8:10pm, but we will be aiming to get there around 7pm for the best parking spots. Since everything at the Mendon is a double-feature, after the film you can choose to watch "10,000 BC" on the same screen, or drive over to the other one to see "Drillbit Taylor".
Look for Sean in his silver Hyundai Elantra with a "Donkey" bumper sticker. Also, if you leave a comment or send an email I will get you my cell phone number. The concession stand at the Mendon is fantastic, so we'll be eating during/between films.
Obviously, not everyone is able to drive out to Mendon, so we are hoping that those of you with cars can help out those without. Those looking for a ride, or those with empty space in their car, can use the comments on this post at the club website.
Directions and other information is available at the Mendon Drive-in website. We will return to our regularly-scheduled format next week, May 18th.

"Documents the true story of the final weeks of rehearsal for the Young at Heart Chorus in Northampton, MA, whose average age is 81, and many of whom must overcome health adversities to participate. Their music is unexpected, going against the stereotype of their age group, performing songs, for example, by James Brown, and Sonic Youth. Although they have toured Europe and sang for royalty, this account focuses on preparing new songs, not an easy endeavor, for a concert in their home town, which succeeds in spite of several real heart breaking events."

"Starring the incomparable and exquisite Brigitte Bardot, CONTEMPT is the story of a woman who gradually develops an overwhelming contempt for her husband (Michel Piccoli), a screenwriter beset by doubts when he is hired to doctor the script for a new film version of The Odyssey. He finds himself caught between the director (legend Fritz Lang playing himself), who wants to remain faithful to Homer, and the vulgar American producer (Jack Palance) who is interested only in filling the screen with topless mermaids. Adapted from the novel by Alberto Moravia, featuring a sublime score by Georges Delerue, shot in breathtaking CinemaScope by Raoul Coutard, CONTEMPT in a new 35mm print is undoubtedly the cinematic treat of the spring!"

"Monkey Warfare" - Apr 6th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, Apr 6th at 7:30pm for Monkey Warfare at the Brattle Theatre . Look for Dan wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"This wonderful Canadian feature premiered to acclaim at last year's Independent Film Festival of Boston but has failed to find a U.S. distributor, not one to be stopped by such a fact, the Brattle has gone ahead and negotiated with the filmmaker to offer this premiere run of one of the most endearing of revolutionary films. Dan (McKellar) and Linda (Wright) are a couple of forty-something ex-radicals who ride their bikes everywhere, live off the grid and maintain their pot and vinyl record habits by picking trash and selling their finds on eBay. When their usual pot dealer is busted, Dan runs across a new one, Susan (Litz) - who happens to be pretty, young, and impressionable. A sort-of love triangle develops between the three but, when Susan uncovers the secret revolutionary past of her new clients, she becomes inspired and heads down a path that has the potential to upset everyone's lives more than any romantic entanglement could. An excellent film with three great performances, a truly outstanding soundtrack and a witty, playful script that stands above most of the quirky, perky indie films that play every year in film festivals. Winner of a Special Jury Prize at The Independent Film Festival of Boston 2007!"

This feature is the closing film for the Boston Underground Film Festival. Tickets might sell out, so you may want to pre-order them from the Brattle.
The festival runs from March 20th through the 23rd. It's a great festival, so head on over to their site and see if there are any other films you are interested in!
"Meet Otis. Otis is about as well-intentioned as a serial-killer can be. He just wants a date to the prom. His victims survive so long as they are willing to play along. While Otis may think he is still in high school, he is actually a pizza delivery driver and perpetual fuck-up."
"Meet the Lawsons an idyllic suburbanite family. They are average in almost every way. But when teenage daughter Riley is abducted by Otis, the remaining broods desire to take matters into their own hands is exacerbated by the FBIs appointment of an insufferable douchebag as the agent in charge of the investigation, and facilitated by Riley's clever escape from Otis clutches."
"As the situation becomes more farcical, and the Lawson's quest for vengeance becomes more indiscriminate, the stage becomes set for a tragedy of Mystic River-like proportions only way funnier. Featuring an impressive cast and clever script, Otis is a wickedly subversive dark comedy that marks the directoral debut of veteran producer Tony Krantz (TVs 24, Mulholland Drive)."

"A car dealer with a dodgy past and new family, Terry (Jason Statham) has always avoided major-league scams. "The Counterfeiters" - Mar 9th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, Mar 9th at 7pm for The Counterfeiters at the Coolidge Corner Theatre . Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"Based on the true story of Salomon Sorowitsch, counterfeiter extraordinaire and bohemian. After getting arrested in a German concentration camp in 1944, he agrees to help the Nazis in an organized counterfeit operation set up to help finance the war effort. What followed was the biggest counterfeit money scam of all times. Over 130 million pound sterling were printed, under conditions that couldn't have been more tragic or spectacular. During the last years of the war, as the German Reich saw that the end was near, the authorities decided to produce their own banknotes in the currencies of their major war enemies. They hoped to use the duds to flood the enemy economy and fill the empty war coffers. At the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, two barracks were separated from the rest of the camp and the outside world, and transformed into a fully equipped counterfeiters workshop. "Operation Bernhard" was born. Prisoners were brought to Sachsenhausen from other camps to implement the plan: professional printers, fastidious bank officials and simple craftsmen all became members of the top-secret counterfeiter commando. They had the choice: if they cooperated with the enemy, they had a chance to survive, as first-class prisoners in a "golden cage" with enough to eat and a bed to sleep in. If they sabotaged the operation, a sure death awaited them. For THE COUNTERFEITERS, it was not only a question of saving their own lives, but also about saving their conscience as well..."

"Taxi to the Dark Side" - Mar 2nd
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, Mar 2nd at 7:15pm for Taxi to the Dark Side at the Coolidge Corner Theatre . Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE, the latest documentary from now two-time Oscar-nominee Alex Gibney (ENRON: The Smartest Guys in the Room), confirms his standing as one of the foremost non-fiction filmmakers working today. A stunning inquiry into the suspicious death of an Afghani taxi driver at Bagram air base in 2002, the film is a fastidiously assembled, uncommonly well-researched examination of how an innocent civilian was apprehended, imprisoned, tortured, and ultimately murdered by the greatest democracy on earth. Intermingling documents and records of the incident with candid testimony from eyewitnesses and participants, the film uncovers an inescapable link between the tragic incidents that unfolded in Bagram and the policies made at the very highest level of the United States government in Washington, D.C. Combining the cool detachment of a forensic expert with the heated indignation of a proud American who holds his country to a high standard, Gibneys film reveals how the Bush administration has systematically betrayed the very ideals it professes to uphold."

Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, Feb 10th at 7:05pm for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days at the Kendall Square Cinema . Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, this unforgettable drama is so gripping it plays like a thriller. Set during the last year of the Ceauçescu dictatorship, ironically called the "Golden Age of Romania," life has become a nightmare for the hard-pressed citizens. The film unfolds over 24 tense hours as a college student (Anamaria Marinca) desperately tries to arrange an illegal abortion for her irresponsible roommate (Laura Vasiliu). As almost everything that could possibly go wrong does, the film reveals how oppression infects every aspect of the culture. A political, moral and spiritual knockout."

The Chase
Friday February 1 at 7pm
Penns first great masterpiece is also one of his darkest works, a portrait of small town America as a festering backwater stagnant with avarice, envy and racism. Marlon Brando is magnificent as the weary sheriff appointed by a small towns corrupt patriarch and reluctantly assigned to capture a misunderstood fugitive, played by Robert Redford. As night descends, debauched house parties boil over into a frenzied carnival of raw violence that tears apart the flimsy façade of cracker barrel hospitality erected by the town elders. With an impressive line-up that includes Angie Dickenson, Jane Fonda, James Fox, Bruce Cabot and Miriam Hopkins, The Chase boasts an ensemble cast that draws from both Old and New Hollywood.
Directed by Arthur Penn. With Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda, Robert Redford
US 1966, 35mm, color, 135 min.
Screening with
The Tears of My Sister
In 1953, Penn directed two live television dramas from scripts by Horton Foote, The Death of the Old Man and The Tears of My Sister. The broadcasts mark the beginning of Penn's work for live television, which would culminate in The Miracle Worker and launch Penn's film career, as well as the beginning of a partnership with Foote that would be renewed with The Chase (based on Foote's play and subsequent novel). The Tears of My Sister is narrated by a young girl, whose voice we hear but do not see, played by Kim Stanley, as she watches her older sister struggle with the pressure to marry a man she does not love.
Directed by Arthur Penn. With Kim Stanley, Katherine Squire, Frank Overton
US 1953, video, b/w, 30 min.
Little Big Man
Saturday February 2 at 3pm
A remarkable adaptation of the Thomas Berger novel, Penns epic recasting of American history blends dark satire with ribald comedy to crack open the myths of the tamingof the Western frontier. Dustin Hoffmans hilarious and heart-wrenching portrait of the stumbling anti-hero, Jack Crabb, brings a poignant vulnerability to Bergers story of the little manswept along by the forces of history. Often cited as one the finest of the revisionist Westerns, Little Big Mans potent outrage over the cruel massacre of Native Americans echoed loudly during the Vietnam War.
Directed by Arthur Penn. With Dustin Hoffman, Faye Dunaway, Martin Balsam
US 1970, 35mm, color, 150 min.
Director Arthur Penn in person
Special Event Tickets $10
Night Moves
Saturday February 2 at 7pm
One of the strongest of the film noir revivals popular during the 1970s, Night Moves pushes the genre to a bleak point of no return. Gene Hackman is wonderfully cast as a disillusioned Los Angeles detective hired to track down a washed out movie stars daughter while also trying to understand the mystery of his own rapidly disintegrating marriage. Night Moves sinister tale of conspiracy and intrigue powerfully evokes the Watergate-era and stands as one of the quintessential American films of the 1970s.
Directed by Arthur Penn. With Gene Hackman, Jennifer Warren, Susan Clark
US 1975, 35mm, color, 100 min.
Followed by
Mickey One
Strangely underrated, Penns wonderfully offbeat and inventive film is an extraordinary tour de force and one of his most stylish and satisfying works. Warren Beatty gives a brilliant turn as Mickey, a stand-up comedian on the lam who descends, like Orpheus, into a strange back alley underworld that just might be of his own invention. At turns haunting and comic, Mickey One offers a mysterious allegory of fear and redemption that features gorgeous photography by Robert Bressons favorite cinematographer, Ghislain Cloquet, and an improvised soundtrack by jazz great Stan Getz.
Directed by Arthur Penn. With Warren Beatty, Alexandra Stewart, Hurd Hatfield
US 1965, 35mm, b/w, 93 min.
And
The Hightest from Visions of Eight
In Penns cinema the human body is frequently explored as expressive medium, with gesture, posture and movement taking on a new level of meaning and subtlety in his filmsoften more expressive than even dialogue. Penns contribution to the eight-part omnibus film of the 1972 Tokyo Olympics is a wonderful study of the body in motion that follows the thrilling trials of the pole vaulting competition.
Directed by Arthur Penn.
US/West Germany 1973, video, color
Alices Restaurant
Sunday February 3 at 3pm
Loosely based on Arlo Guthries spoken ballad, Alices Restaurant is Penns first and only credit as a screenwriter. A lament to the end of the countercultural revolution,Penns film vividly evokes the hopes and dreams burnished by the hippie generation. Guthrie himself stars as a wandering soul perplexed by the strange contradictions of America during the Vietnam-era and ultimately engaged in a peaceful one-man battle against the bureaucratic war machine. Effused with a melancholy spirit, Alices Restaurant is one of Penns gentlest and most poignant films.
Directed by Arthur Penn. With Arlo Guthrie, Pat Quinn, James Broderick
US 1969, 35mm, color, 111 min.
Bonnie and Clyde
Sunday February 3 at 7pm
One of the pivotal films of the 1960s, Bonnie and Clyde is also a wonderful portrait of amour fou, with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the eponymous heroes whose pursuit of love and larceny scars a dark arrow across the heart of America. Penns brilliant evocation of the Depression-era and Americas most notorious bandits caused a scandal for its unusual counterbalance of comedy with a new level of graphic violence hitherto unseen in American cinema.
Directed by Arthur Penn. With Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, Gene Hackman
US 1967, 35mm, b/w, 111 min.
Followed by
The Left Handed Gun
Totally ignored by American critics when it was first released, The Left Handed Gun was recognized as a major first film by the French, who noted the films sensitive portrait of troubled youth and its disturbing vision of violent America. Originally conceived as a vehicle for James Dean, Penns debut explores the first in a line of social outcasts that recur throughout Penns cinema, reinventing the legendary figure of Billy the Kid as a sympathetic misfit unable to integrate into a society deliberately cruel to those who are different. Paul Newman subtly captures Billys fragile, troubled life in a nuanced performance that frequently replaces words with resonant and unexpected gestures.
Directed by Arthur Penn. With Paul Newman, Lita Milan, John Dehner
US 1958, 35mm, b/w, 105 min.
The Miracle Worker
Monday February 4 at 7pm
Penns first real recognition as a director came from his screen adaptation of the beloved play which he had successfully directed twice on Broadway. For the screen, Penn beautifully captured the tenderness and terror that united Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan, played with great sensitivity and power by Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft, respectively. The Miracle Worker is a key work in Penns oeuvre, the film that perhaps makes clearest the concern for non-verbal communication and expressive gestures that runs throughout his films.
Directed by Arthur Penn. With Anne Bancroft, Patty Duke, Victor Jory
US 1962, 35mm, b/w, 106 min.
Missouri Breaks
Monday February 4 at 9pm
Featuring the incredible pairing of Jack Nicholson as a feckless cattle thief and Marlon Brando as the Irish regulatorhired to hunt him down, Missouri Breaks is a rollicking and highly unusual Western that, in typical Penn fashion, strains the boundaries of the genre. Penns empowerment of performers is taken to a wonderful furthest extreme by the subversive presence of Brandos cross-dressing and unpredictable assassin, who effectively turns codes of masculinity and narrative continuity upon their heads. Once dismissed as an oddityin Penns career, The Missouri Breaks has been reevaluated as one of the more ambitious and original Westerns of its time, placing it in the company of Peter Fondas The Hired Hand and Monte Hellmans The Shooting.
Directed by Arthur Penn. With Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson, Randy Quaid
US 1976, 35mm, color, 126 min.

Winner of the Best Documentary title at both the SXSW and Los Angeles film festivals this year, BILLY THE KID is a sensitive and humorous verite portrait of Billy, a 15-year-old outsider growing up in small-town Maine. Billy appears, in many ways, like other teenage boys. He's into heavy metal and martial arts, is an desperate to find a girlfriend, and aspires to a career as an actor and rock star. Yet in other ways Billy is unique. A troubled past and ongoing behavioral issues have left him marked. But he is unapologetic about his personality and refuses to be victimized, creating his own techniques to help him survive in an environment of pain, conformity and prejudice. Billy funny, sharp and strangely funny for his age, and remarkably candid. We witness his life from his perspective -- from intimate conversations with his mother, to being bullied at school, to his fantasies of becoming a superhero. We also experience the exhilarating pangs of first love as Billy pursues Heather, a shy 16-year-old waitress. Will Billy get the girl? Will his community accept him on his own terms? BILLY THE KID challenges viewers to imagine themselves beyond labels.

"Ridley Scott's legendary adaptation of Phillip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? gave us a startling vision of a noir-ishly dystopic future, in which the line between human and non-human has worn perilously thin. Scott's masterpiece not only anticipated our future but designed it: Much of our world today appears, well, just so Blade Runner. To commemorate its 25th anniversary, Scott has gone back, corrected a few details and fashioned a version that he feels is closest to what he had originally intended. One of the greatest American films of the Eighties has just gotten even better. - from the New York Film Festival"

A film audition typecasts Bashar to play an Al Qaeda terrorist role. Bashar has twenty-four hours to make enough money to pay his bills. For the remaining hours left until tomorrow, an unceasing flow of passengers ride in his taxi and give the Arab cabbie the run-around on issues that deal with suicide bombers, George Bush, Rai music and world geography. All the while, Bashars nostalgia for Ramallah poses the question of whether or not the American Dream is an idea really worth fighting for. Shot in Los Angeles and Palestine, based on true stories."

"THE RAPE OF EUROPA is a feature documentary film that takes the audience on an epic journey through seven countries and into a violent whirlwind of fanaticism, greed, and warfare that threatened to wipe out the artistic heritage of Europe. For twelve long years, the Nazis looted and destroyed art on a scale unprecedented in history. But heroic young art historians and curators from America and across Europe fought back, mounting a miraculous campaign that would rescue and return the millions of art works displaced by the war. Joan Allen narrates this breathtaking chronicle about the battle over the very survival of centuries of western culture."

Look for Corinna carrying a blue handbag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"A teenager tackles the mysteries of life, love and public speaking in Rocket Science, a wry comedy of adolescent angst by Jeffrey Blitz, director of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Spellbound. Making his feature narrative debut, Blitz leaves behind the conventions and cliches of coming-of-age tales to instead conjure a world where everyone, regardless of age, is befuddled by desire and the longing for human connection. Mixing humor with a compassionate regard for his characters and their idiosyncrasies, Blitz creates a film about the little insights that can emerge from, and ultimately eclipse, the agonies and disappointments of youth."

"Summercamp!" - Aug 12th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, Aug 12th at 5:30pm for Summercamp! at the Brattle Theatre . Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
This beguiling, joyful documentary follows a group of young campers, aged between 6 and 15, during their stay at Swift Nature Camp. SUMMERCAMP! captures that extraordinary three week period where, removed from their everyday lives, kids can really, truly be themselves. Camp is a place where kids can be kids, where their home and school lives momentarily fade into the background as they go through the highs and lows of adolescent rituals: sing-alongs, talent shows, homesickness, counselor mutiny and first love.
Its clear that directors Bradley Beesley and Sarah Price worked hard to gain the confidence of these children and teens as they record not only the public fights and friendships but also the private hardships and secret conversations of kids who frequently must deal with situations beyond their years. Beesley and Price submerge themselves into the curious camp subculture, capturing a diverse array of adolescents from all economic and social backgrounds.
We guarantee that, by the end of the film and after seeing life through their non-calloused eyes, you will have fallen in love with at least one of these precocious and innocently charming subjects. Our personal favorite is the heartbreakingly sweet loner, Holly, who obsesses over chickadees and other pocketable friends. Featuring music by The Flaming Lips, this endearing film explores the agony and ecstasy of life in the unique and temporary communities of summer camps.

"Masters of comedy David Wain ("Wet Hot American Summer") and Ken Marino team up behind the scenes and in front of the camera to create THE TEN: a lively, smart, and irreverent film about breaking all the rules. Directed by Wain and written by Wain and Marino, THE TEN presents a series of interconnected comic sketches designed to reinterpret -- and reinvent the Ten Commandments, making them "meaningful" (and funny) to a young, hip, audience of contemporary sinners. With each story told in a different style, but containing overlapping characters and themes, the film is a grand burlesque boasting an all-star cast that puts the sin back in cinema."

Having made his name as a war reporter, he has seen some of the most horrifying sights imaginable. So he feels that his current puff-piece assignment, an interview with pop diva, TV and movie star Katya (Sienna Miller) is beneath his dignity. The two meet in a restaurant and, instantly, it's a collision of two worldsPierre's serious political focus and Katya's superficial world of celebrity. Their confrontation evolves into a passionate verbal chess game spiked with wit, intrigue and sexual tension, capped with a riveting twist ending."

"The true life story of Ralph Waldo "Petey" Greene Jr. In the mid-to-late 1960s, in Washington, D.C., vibrant soul music and exploding social consciousness were combining to unique and powerful effect. It was the place and time for Petey to fully express himself - sometimes to outrageous effect - and "tell it like it is." With the support of his irrepressible and tempestuous girlfriend Vernell, the newly minted ex-con talks his way into an on-air radio gig. He forges a friendship and a partnership with fellow prison inmate Milo's brother Dewey Hughes. From the first wild morning on the air, Petey relies on the more straight-laced Dewey to run interference at WOL-AM, where Dewey is the program director. At the station, Petey becomes an iconic radio personality, surpassing even the established popularity of his fellow disc jockeys, Nighthawk and Sunny Jim. Combining biting humor with social commentary, Petey openly courts controversy for station owner E.G. Sonderling. Petey was determined to make not just himself but his community heard during an exciting and turbulent period in American history. As Petey's voice, humor, and spirit surge across the airwaves with the vitality of the era, listeners tune in to hear not only incredible music but also a man speaking directly to them about race and power in America like few people ever have. Through the years, Petey's "The truth just is" style --- on - and off-air - would redefine both Petey and Dewey, and empower each to become the man he would most like to be."

"Frownland" - Jul 8th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, Jul 8th at 7pm for Frownland at the Harvard Film Archive . Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"No matter what their flaws, the main characters in mainstream movies are almost always appealing in some way. If they are nebbishes, their klutziness is endearing. (Look at the work of Woody Allen.) If they are lonely, their alienation is grand and alluring. (Look at the work of Orson Welles.) If they are evil, their villainy is sexy and rakish. (Look at the work of Christopher Walken.) Ronald Bronstein strips away the Hollywood idealizations and asks us to spend time with genuinely unromantic characters leading genuinely unromantic lives. He creates characters we dont want to see ourselves as, characters we refuse to identify with. There is much lip service paid to the importance of depictions of otherness in film; Frownland reveals that the concept of otherness as redemptive and transformative is a romantic myth. He gives us otherness we want to cross the street to avoid; otherness without sentimentality. Or is he just giving us ourselves with our selfdeluded idealizations removed?"

Independent Film Festival of Boston 2007
The fine people of the Coolidge Corner Theater asked me to let you guys know about the Independent Film Festival of Boston. The 5th Annual Festival kicks off this Wednesday with "Fay Grim" at the Somerville Theatre. Then, from Thursday the 26th through Tuesday May 1st, over 110 screenings will be spread across the Coolidge Corner, Somerville, and Brattle. Independent cinema and our local independent theatres need your support, and the IFF allows you to do both, so please check out http://iffboston.org/ for schedules and more information! Some of the films I plan on checking out myself are The King of Kong, Fido, Black Sheep, and The Ten, among others... Since it's my neighborhood theatre, I'll probably be mostly sticking to the Coolidge.. If you're interested in attending one of these (or any other) screening in the festival, visit the club webpage and leave some comments... Its a great way (hopefully) to find others to go to screenings with.. Finally, if you are planning on attending a screening, it's always a good idea to buy tickets in advance, as some of these screenings will be hot tickets!

Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
Mayor Menino asked area theatres not to show this film, so clearly it has to be the movie pick this week.
"New Jersey residents, Meatwad, an innocent wad of meat, Frylock, a wise box of fries, and Master Shake, a selfish milkshake, spend their care free days like most roommates, getting on each others nerves, figuring out how to pay the bills and having strange, incomprehensible adventures with a handful of bumbling aliens and monsters. Mostly they just enjoy hanging out with Carl Brutananadilewski, a lazy slob of a neighbor with a sweet above-ground pool. This tranquil idyllic suburban life is upended however, when the Insanoflex, an immortal piece of exercise equipment threatens the balance of galactic peace, and it is up to the Aqua Teen Hunger Force to save the day. Or themselves, whichever is the easiest. The peril escalates when Plutonians, Olgethorpe and Emory, team up with the Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past to seize control of this sinister and deadly device. Also along for the ride are a talking piece of watermelon, Neil Peart from the band Rush, Mooninites, Ignignokt and Err, and MC Pee Pants. Facing their greatest crisis to date the true origins of the Aqua Teens will be exposed and a long lost Aqua Teen will be revealed. People of Boston beware! "Grindhouse" - A Very Special SNFC
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, April 8th at 8:00pm for "Grindhouse" at the Regal Fenway Stadium 13.
This is a double-feature and will run about 3 hours. Because of the length of this film combined with the available showtimes, the club is going to be a little different this week, as we will be meeting for food and drink BEFORE we venture over to the Fenway 13 Theatre for the film. Meet us at Boston Beer Works (61 Brookline Ave. - Opposite Fenway Park) at 6pm, look for Sean wearing a nametag outside the restaurant. We will get a table based on the headcount at 6pm, but if you need to show up later we can hopefully get a second table and float between them.
Purchasing tickets in advance is strongly suggested, as this is likely going to be a popular show. It is in one of the larger theatres at Fenway (#13), but at a minimum you might want to buy tickets before coming to the restaurant, if you don't order them ahead of time online...
"Kill Bill director Quentin Tarantino and Sin City director Robert Rodriguez join forces to offer a cinematic tribute to the blood-soaked exploitation epics of yesteryear with this hyper-violent coupling of two 60-minute features punctuated by a collection of outrageous trailers. In "Death Proof" -- director Tarantino's take on the slasher films of the 1970s and '80s -- Kurt Russell stars as an engine-revving psychopath who prefers to take out his victims hit-and-run style. Rodriguez's segment -- entitled "Planet Terror" -- details the violent struggle between a ravenous army of zombie-like humanoids who have taken over a planet not so different from our own, and the remaining survivors who refuse to go down without a fight. Its tantalizing title borrowed from the term frequently used to describe the seedy, 1970s-era inner-city movie theaters that screened excessive, low-budget independent films containing copious amounts of violence and nudity as a means of offering counter-programming to the decidedly more restrained big-budget studio films, Grindhouse takes its love for these unabashedly sleazy efforts one step further by offering an intermission which showcases a jaw-dropping collection of fake exploitation trailers." ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

There are some special things to be aware of regarding this weeks film:
1) As I mentioned a few weeks ago, both on the mailing list and the club webpage, this is a special free screening. If you don't already have a pass to get into the screening, more information on how to get one is available from the Brattle Theatre as well as the SNFC homepage.
2) A screening pass does not guarantee you a seat in the theatre, and seating is first-come, first-served. This is a "hot ticket", so it would be wise to arrive quite early.
3) I won't be saving a place in line for anyone, that wouldn't be fair to the people who showed up early. No exceptions.
If you have any questions, feel free to drop a line.
"Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright - the makers of Shaun of the Dead - are back together for a fabulously funny and fast-paced action-comedy. Pegg plays Nicholas Angel, a top London cop who's so good that he makes his fellow officers look bad. Banished to a sleepy, seemingly crime-free village Angel soon finds himself up to his badge in bodies, though he has a hard time convincing his new colleagues that they're dealing with murder. The style of a Hollywood action-thriller is crossed with the sensibility of the team's enduringly popular TV series Spaced, creating a sharp, surprising and endlessly entertaining comedy. - notes from the ICA, London"

ANNOUNCEMENT: Hot Fuzztival
This announcement is a bit earlier than your usual SNFC fare, but you need to act quickly, so I figured the sooner the better!
The Brattle Theatre is running a "super cop" film festival called the Hot Fuzztival, in honor of the upcoming release of Hot Fuzz (the new comedy from the creators of Shaun of the Dead). The highlight of the festival is a preview screening of Hot Fuzz on Sunday, March 25th, one month before it is released here in the states. Creators Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg will be in person.
The trick is, in order to get a pass to this screening, you need to buy a ticket to one of the other films in the Hot Fuzztival in advance. If you bring a print out of the order to the box office on or after March 16th, you will get a free pass to see Hot Fuzz. While this is a little unorthodox, it's the only way to get a pass for the screening. More details can be found at the Hot Fuzztival Page.
Obviously, I am telling you all this for a reason. The SNFC film for Sunday, March 25th, will be Hot Fuzz. If you are interested, you should jump through these hoops and get yourself a ticket!

A look at the career of consumer advocate Ralph Nader from wannabe presidential candidate to public pariah. Once upon a time not a long ago, Nader was one of the most admired Americans and the leader of the modern Consumer Movement. Without ever holding public office, Nader built a legislative record over the last thirty years rivaling that of any contemporary president. Many things we take for granted including seat belts, airbags, product labeling are largely due to the efforts of Ralph Nader and his citizen groups. Yet today, when most people hear the name "Ralph Nader," they think of the man who split the vote in the 2000 election gave the country George W. Bush. As a result, despite his impeccable reputation, Nader has become a pariah even among former friends and allies. How did this happen? AN UNREASONABLE MAN traces the life and career Nader, one the most unique, important and controversial political figures of our time.

During Larry's watch, extraordinary things begin to occur: Mayans, Roman Gladiators, and cowboys emerge from their diorama to wage epic battles; in his quest for fire, a Neanderthal burns down his own display; Attila the Hun (Patrick Gallagher) pillages his neighboring exhibits, and a T-Rex reminds everyone why he's history's fiercest predator. Amidst the chaos, the only person Larry can turn to for advice is a wax figure of President Theodore Roosevelt (Robin Williams), who helps our hero harness the bedlam, stop a nefarious plot, and save the museum.

"A stunning conclusion to the trilogy begun with Amores Perros and 21 Grams, Babel is a grandly conceived and perfectly calibrated epic. Our inability to communicate, between cultures or even within relationships, is a jumping-off point for an astonishing series of interwoven stories covering the entire globe."

"The transformation of American life in the aftermath of 9/11 and the assassination of the U.S. President is the subject of this mock TV documentary broadcast in 2008. It is a type of journalism we have grown extremely accustomed to: a combination of archival footage and carefully composed interviews, presented in a respectful and dignified manner. Taking a page from Hitchcock's playbook, however, director/co-writer Gabriel Range ratchets up the tension. History tells us that the President will be shotwe just don't know when it will happen in the film. At this point, the documentary turns its attention to the search for the assassin, and traces the efforts of the FBI agent, the forensic expert and others, to find the truth."

"A medieval adventurepart legendary fable, part horror-storybased on the seminal ninth century Anglo-Saxon poem, Beowulf. Director Sturla Gunnarsson tells the blood-soaked tale of a Norse warriors battle against the murderous and vengeful troll Grendel (Ingvar Sigurdsson), who has laid siege to the kingdom of Hrothgar (Stellan Skarsgård), King of the Danes. Beowulf (Gerard Butler) leads a troop of warriors across the sea to rid the village of the marauding troll, but his willingness to kill on behalf of Hrothgar wavers when it becomes clear that the King is responsible for the trolls rampages. Filmed in Iceland, the drama plays out in a brutish Northern Europe where Beowulf is caught in a battle of vengeance, loyalty and mercy. In English."

"No one among the Hoovers quite has it together, but it's not for lack of trying. Father Richard, a hopelessly optimistic motivational speaker, is desperately attempting to sell his 9-step program for success--without much success. Meanwhile, the Hoovers' pro-honesty mother Sheryl is constantly harried by her family's eccentric secrets, especially those of her brother, a suicidal Proust scholar fresh out of the hospital after being jilted by his gay lover. Then there are young Hoovers with their unlikely dreams--the four-eyed, slightly pump, seven year-old would-be beauty queen Olive and Dwayne, an anger-fueled, Nietzche-reading teen who has taken a staunch vow of silence until he gets into the Air Force Academy. Topping off the family is the grandfather, a foul-mouthed pleasure-seeker recently kicked out of his retirement home for snorting heroin. They might not be the picture of the perfect mental health, but when a fluke gets Olive invited to compete in the fiercely competitive Little Miss Sunshine competition in California, the whole Hoover family rallies behind her. They pile into their rusted-out VW bus and head West on a three-day tragicomic journey filled with madcap surprises and leading up to Olive's big debut--which will change the entire misfit family in ways they could never imagine."

"A Scanner Darkly" - Jul 9th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, Jul 9th at 5:05pm for A Scanner Darkly at the Kendall Square Cinema . Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
Americas endless and futile war on drugs has become one and the same with its war on terror. Reluctant undercover cop Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves) follows orders to start spying on his friends, Jim Barris, Ernie Luckman, Donna Hawthorne and Charles Freck. When he is directed to step up the surveillance on himself, he is launched on a paranoid journey into the absurd, where identities and loyalties are impossible to decode.
Based on legendary science-fiction author Philip K. Dicks own experiences, A Scanner Darkly tells the darkly comedic, caustic, but deeply tragic tale of drug use in the modern world. The film plays like a graphic novel come to life with live-action photography overlaid with an advanced animation process - a method known as interpolated rotoscoping, first employed in writer/director Richard Linklaters 2001 film "Waking Life" - to create a haunting version of America, seven years from now.

"One of the most memorable chapters of the Vietnam War has also long been one of the least revisited: the antiwar movement inside the military. Called the G.I. Movement, this resistance manifested itself in countless ways: in organized protests, in desertions and in the coffeehouses that sprang up across the country near military bases. In the early 1970's the documentary filmmaker David Zeiger worked in one such coffeehouse, the Oleo Strut in Killeen, TX, not far from Fort Hood...
In his smart, timely documentary about the G.I. Movement, SIR! NO SIR!, Mr. Zeiger takes a look at how the movement changed and occasionally even rocked the military from the ground troops on up... During the 1960's and 70's American newspapers routinely reported a significantly different story than the one later cooked up by Hollywood and other revisionists. This film shows that as antiwar sentiment gathered strength in American streets, a parallel movement seized the armed forces. By September 1971 dissent among the ranks had become a front-page subject in this newspaper, with a headline that read "Army Is Shaken by Crisis in Morale and Discipline." ... John Kerry's bid for president proved that long after fighting in Vietnam came to an end, a war of words continues to rage. It's a war of words that finds Jane Fonda - who performed for tens of thousands of troops in an antiwar revue, 'Free the Army,' and makes a passionate appearance in the film - still labeled Hanoi Jane. 'Remembered as a war that was lost because of betrayal at home,' Mr. Lembcke has written, 'Vietnam becomes a modern-day Alamo that must be avenged, a pretext for more war and generations of more veterans.' In SIR! NO SIR!, Mr. Zeiger remembers that war and the veterans whose struggles against it are too often forgotten." - Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

"It is now clear that we face a deepening global climate crisis that requires us to act boldly, quickly, and wisely." - Al Gore.
Former Vice President Al Gore presents this important documentary on the planet-wide crisis of global warming. In a riveting multi-media lecture, he presents a wide array of facts and information that reveal the truth about climate change: if this issue is not addressed, all life on the planet will be devastated. Gore became interested in this startling issue while at college 30 years ago, and in the past few years, since retiring from politics, he has traveled the globe staging free events for small, invited audiences on this issue. He works exhaustively to disabuse doubters of the notion that climate change is debatable. His proof is the indisputable correlation between CO2 emissions and exponentially rising temperatures, an epidemic which is already responsible for ice-cap melting, drought, and rising sea levels. This is not a political issue, rather one of global stability, and Gore's goal is to lay out the facts for the audience to draw their own conclusions. With humor and searing intelligence, he outlines crucial steps we must take to avert impending disaster and proves that inaction is no longer an option in fact, it's downright immoral.

Langdon joins forces with a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), and learns the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion - an actual secret society. In a breathless race through Paris, London and beyond, Langdon and Neveu match wits with a faceless powerbroker who appears to work for Opus Dei - a clandestine, Vatican-sanctioned Catholic organization believed to have long plotted to seize the Priory's secret. Unless Langdon and Neveu can decipher the labyrinthine puzzle in time, the Priory's secret - and a stunning historical truth - will be lost forever.

Jerome (Max Minghella) is an aspiring artist who arrives at a prestigious East Coast art institute to study. While Jerome enjoys daydreams of becoming the best-respected painter on Earth and winning the hearts of his female classmates, he soon learns the sad truth -- his "cool artist" act is old hat in the big city, and as he's surrounded by every art school cliché on Earth, practically nothing about him stands out. Determined to be recognized whatever the consequences, Jerome maps out a bizarre plan to become famous that has some unexpected consequences. "Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story" - April 30th

"The best mock documentaries - This is SPINAL TAP, BOB ROBERTS, WAITING FOR GUFFMAN - work because they fall just short of mockery. They have real affection for their subjects, and can recreate those subjects' hilariously skewed version of the world insofar as they fully inhabit that world. Mock-docs that don't do this are either mean, obvious, or both.
Thankfully, BLACKBALLED writer-director Brant Sersen loves paintballers, and his movie has the winking empathy that marks all great mock-docs. A hilarious cast, complete with (Boston's own) Rob Corddry of "The Daily Show" and much of the cast from the famed "Upright Citizens Brigade," put together a group of memorable characters and one-liners that are sure to become tomorrow's dorm-room jokes.
Corddry is Bobby Dukes, the uncontested Michael Jordan of paintball for many years...until the day he committed the unthinkable during a paintball match: he "wiped."We get this back-story in a clever opening sequence, then meet Bobby ten years after his betrayal of the sport. Now, he's decided that it is time to return to the paintball field, face the demons of his past, and assemble a motley crew of paintballers to compete in the Hudson Valley Paintball Classic. Game on! - notes from the Independent Film Festival of Boston 2005.
Alongside Corddry, the cast is rounded out by many familiar comedic faces including: Ed Helms (The Daily Show), Paul Scheer (VH1's Best Week Ever), Rob Riggle (Saturday Night Live), Rob Huebel (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and local comic legend DJ Hazzard."

"Who would ever dream that what war-torn Afghanistan needed was a school for hairdressers? Yet this surprising and humorous film reveals that there is healing power—as well as economic opportunity—in the pursuit of beauty. Six American volunteers, three of them Afghan-Americans returning home for the first time in 20 years, come to Kabul to open the country's first post-Taliban beauty school. The response is so overwhelming that a lottery must be held to select the lucky students. Features the music of Ahmad Zahir. Directed by Liz Mermin. (Partially subtitled)"

Note: This film is showing in the Coolidge's "Screening Room", which is quite small, so you might want to show up early or preorder tickets.
"This riveting family saga looks back to San Francisco in the late ‘60s when budding filmmaker Ralph Arlyck made a candid short film about Sean, a precocious 4-year-old hippie child who lived in his apartment building. A natural on camera, Sean is frank about how he smokes pot and hangs out with speedfreaks. The film gained great acclaim (and naturally sounded alarms), but the story doesn't end there. Three decades later, Arlyck finds Sean again, now a struggling husband and father. New interviews with Sean as well as his freewheeling father, sarcastic communist grandma, and boisterous family are combined with original '60s footage to paint vivid time-traveling portraits. FOLLOWING SEAN is an epic chronicle of growing up and moving on filled with moments of surprising tenderness and humor."

"Baby Face was one of the most notorious of all the films of the Pre-Code era - the time during the early Depression when the Hollywood studios virtually ignored the censors and offered up one sex-filled film after another. Public morals were so offended that the industry was forced to adopt an even stricter Production Code in 1934. Advertised with the titillating warning, "Parents: do not bring your children," Baby Face stars Barbara Stanwyck as an abused daughter who turns tricks out of a speakeasy in Erie, Pennsylvania, then heads to Manhattan, where she sleeps her way up the corporate ladder (with a young John Wayne, among many others). A longer (by five minutes), even racier version was recently discovered by the Library of Congress and is making its debut at the Brattle. After the film, we'll be showing scenes from the censored version for comparison. - adapted from notes from the Film Forum, NYC"

"World War III has come and gone. In its wake, is left chaos. This chaos was quickly reigned-in by small insurgent groups who used fear, force and "faith" to subdue an entire nation, forging a new, "Greater" Britain. It is in this brave new world that V (Weaving), a mysterious, masked, swashbuckling figure, saves the young Evey Hammond (Portman) from unspeakable tortures, and takes her under his wing, into the Shadow Gallery; a world that may prove to be full of tortures of its own. All the while, bodies have been piling up within the ranks of the England's fairly new but powerful government. All the murders are connected, far deeper than any mere affiliation with any governmental branch. These killings are vastly encompassing, but acutely personal. It is a vendetta: In a totalitarian state, the government has the people convinced that a single "terrorist", V, would have them under siege. But V would stand to say that he is showing the people that they have been under siege by their government. V is out to avenge individuality, and reclaim freedom for the people, even at the expense of their happiness. We are all in prison, and he is "showing us the bars". The lines between hero and villain do not blur, but become frighteningly clear and you will become uneasy, at times, when you find yourself cheering for V. That is, anyway, if the film is anything like the graphic novel. Find out for yourself, and read the novel, by Alan Moore, first. "England Prevails", under one law or under chaos."

Kairo (Pulse) - February 26th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, February 26th at 7:45pm for Kairo (Pulse) at the Brattle Theatre. Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion
Often referred to as one of the scariest films ever made, PULSE (KAIRO) tells the story of a group of young friends rocked by the sudden suicide of one of their own, and his subsequent, ghostly reappearance in grainy computer and video images. Is he trying to contact them from beyond the grave or is there something more sinister afoot? The mysterious floppy disk they find in the dead man's apartment may provide a clue, but instead launches a program that seems to present odd, ethereal transmissions of people engaged in solitary activities in their apartments. But there is something not quite right in the appearance and behavior of these lonely souls. Soon, there are more strange deaths and disappearances within the group, terrifying rooms sealed in red tape, and the appearance of more ghosts as the city of Tokyo – and the world – is slowly drained of life.
The prolific writer/director Kiyoshi Kurosawa is one of the most remarkable talents working in cinema today. While his efforts tend to be in the realm of genre stories (mostly horror), his films portray a lyricism and grace that rise far above other horror directors. With PULSE (KAIRO), eschewing gore and easy shocks for a harrowing tone unique to his cinema, Kurosawa has made a dense and complex film whose metaphysical and psychological resonance will last long after the chills have subsided.

Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, February 5th at 5:10pm for "Something New" at the Fenway 13. Look for Audra wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"A romantic comedy about finding love where it's least expected, Something New marks the feature directorial debut of Sanaa Hamri. If love is an adventure, it's one yet to be embarked upon by Kenya Denise McQueen (Sanaa Lathan). A beautiful L.A. career woman, Kenya works as a senior manager at a prestigious accounting firm, and is on the verge of making partner. But she has yet to find her own partner and a fulfilling personal life. It's not that she's stopped looking; her (mental) checklist is at the ready. After another Valentine's Day spent working late, Kenya agrees to a blind date with Brian Kelly (Simon Baker), a sexy and free-spirited landscape architect who turns out to be not exactly what she'd pictured for herself. Then again, she does need the yard of her new house fixed up... Her girlfriends Cheryl, Suzzette, and Nedra (Wendy Raquel Robinson, Golden Brooks, Taraji P. Henson) are there for her with advice, while Cheryl's new beau Walter (Mike Epps) shares a male perspective with Brian. Kenya's socially prominent parents Joyce and Edmond (Alfred Woodard, Earl Billings) and womanizing younger brother Nelson (Donald Faison) also voice their own opinions. But it's when her perfect match, Mark (Blair Underwood), enters the picture that Kenya is truly thrown into confusion. Ultimately, Kenya has to decide for herself and follow her heart - no matter where it takes her."

"Bubble" - January 29th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, January 29th at 7:20pm for "Bubble" at the Kendall Square Cinema. Look for Sean wearing a nametag and sitting in the little seating area in the lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"In this unique cinematic experiment from acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh, an unlikely love triangle is born at a doll factory in a small midwestern town fallen on hard times. Lonely and isolated, long time employees Martha and Kyle have become friends by default in spite of their drastic age difference, but their dynamic is upset by the arrival of a new worker: young, attractive single mother Rose. As Martha grows increasingly wary about Rose’s dubious character, she discovers Kyle and Rose developing a relationship of their own."
"One morning, Rose is found dead, strangled in her own home. An investigation begins, one that will call into question our established assumptions about these characters and life in their small town. Featuring a cast of non-professional actors from the Ohio location, Soderbergh brings this tragic story of characters striving to establish and maintain meaningful connections to life with startling realism."

"Transamerica" - January 22nd
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, January 22nd at 4:45pm for "Transamerica" at the Kendall Square Cinema. Look for Audra wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"Bree, a pre-operative, male-to-female transsexual, holds down two jobs and saves every penny so that she can pay for one last operation that will make her a woman at last. One day, however, she receives a strange phone call. It appears that on the other side is Toby, apparently her son, who must be the product of a somewhat clumsy sexual encounter years ago when she was a man. He stays in New York, incarcerated. Bree flies from Los Angeles to New York in order to get the boy out of jail. At first she is reluctant to do so, but her therapist convinces her to face up to her past. The boy is handed over to her without a word of explanation and Toby believes the woman to be some Christian missionary determined to convert reprobates to Jesus; Bree sees no reason to clear up the misunderstanding. However, she finds out that the boy just wants to escape from her and hitchhike to Los Angeles. She persuades him to accompany her back to the west coast--secretly planning to leave him at his stepfather's along the way. Toby is happy to take her up on her offer."

"The Matador" - January 15th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, January 15th at 7:15pm for "The Matador" at the Boston Common Loews. Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the main lobby on the ground floor about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"In writer/director Richard Shepard's dark comedy THE MATADOR, Julian Noble (Pierce Brosnan) is a hit man who's very good at what he does. He’s in Mexico City doing another job but sadly for Julian, he has reached a low point in his life -- the murder business has all but killed him.
Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear) is also in Mexico City on business, although a decidedly different kind of business. Danny lives in Denver with his wife Bean (Hope Davis), and while they may have troubles financially, there is a youthful lust between them that belies ten years of marriage. Danny finds himself in Mexico City for a business opportunity whose outcome could be the difference between solving all his financial problems or falling even deeper into debt.
One night, at the hotel bar, these two men meet. Before long, they find themselves involved in a strange friendship -- built on the dark and drunken honesty shared among strangers who believe they will never see each other in the light of day.
Spanning four countries, six months and many margaritas, THE MATADOR takes the hit man film and spins it on its head, creating a character-driven story that’s hip and hilarious—strange and full of unexpected heart.
Featuring a bold, outrageously original performance from Pierce Brosnan, and a funny, unexpected turn from Greg Kinnear, THE MATADOR is a buddy film, blended with extra tequila."

"New York Doll" - January 8th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, January 8th at 5:15pm for "New York Doll" at the Coolidge Corner Theatre. Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion. Note: This film is showing in the Coolidge's "Screening Room", which is quite small, so you might want to show up early or preorder tickets.
"With his mild-mannered exterior and day job at a Mormon library, it's hard to connect buttoned-down Arthur Kane with his raucous rock 'n' roll past. But during the early 70s Arthur "Killer" Kane was the statuesque bassist for the legendary (and highly influential) glam-rock outfit The New York Dolls. Kane, however, found it difficult to recoup after the Dolls' demise, struggling to spark his music career, battling alcoholism, and failing in his marriage. Director Greg Whiteley's film picks up Kane's story just as his long-held dream of reuniting the Dolls finally comes true with a high profile gig in London, and follows him through the unexpected events of his post-show homecoming.
Before the feature, we present A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN UNDER-APPRECIATED STAR, director David Winkfield's short documentary about Brookline resident Jerry Pearlswig, a professional autograph hound and all-around sweet guy, who is on his day's quest to get a photo with actor (and musician) Kevin Bacon."

Once there, they discover that King Kong is a real creature, living in a massive jungle where creatures from prehistoric times have been protected and hidden for millions of years. As the explorers search for the great ape, their quest puts them up against both Kong and his dinosaur enemies. Ultimately, it is the attention of a beautiful human woman that soothes Kong long enough for him to be subdued by the explorers and shipped back to New York, where his bleak future involves being put on display in front of humans... but how long can even the mightiest shackles of man hold back an ape 25 feet tall?"

A corporate lawyer faces a moral dilemma as he finesses the questionable merger of two powerful U.S. oil companies, while across the globe, a disenfranchised Pakistani teenager falls prey to the recruiting efforts of a charismatic cleric. "Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic" - November 27th

Look for Sean wearing a nametag and sitting in the little seating area in the lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic is written by Sarah Silverman, directed by Liam Lynch, and produced by Heidi Herzon, Mark Williams and Randy Sosin. Lynch, the fastrising video and film director currently in production on the feature TENACIOUS D IN: THE PICK OF DESTINY, collaborated with Silverman to adapt her show to the screen. The film comprises Silverman's performance before a live audience interwoven with stylish musical numbers and backstage intrigue. Bob Odenkirk, Brian Posehn and Silverman's comedian/actor sister, Laura Silverman, make appearances along with Silverman's band The Silver Men.
Silverman, who has been compared to the legendary Lenny Bruce, is known as one of the funniest and most provocative people in comedy. Despite the current political climate, in JESUS IS MAGIC she takes on such pitchblack topics as September 11 th , unwanted body hair, and the Holocaust, and spins them into decidedly unpolitically correct comedic gold. As she says in the film, "When God gives you AIDS, (and God does give you AIDS, by the way) make LemonAIDS."

"In 1955, a tough, skinny guitar-slinger who called himself J.R. Cash walked into the soon-to-be-famous Sun Studios in Memphis. It was a moment that would have an indelible effect on American culture. With his driving freight-train chords, steel-eyed intensity and a voice as deep and black as night, Cash sang blistering songs of heartache and survival that were gutsy, full of real life and unlike anything heard before. That day kicked off the electrifying early career of Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix). As he pioneered a fiercely original sound that blazed a trail for rock, country, punk, folk and rap stars to come, Cash began a rough-and-tumble journey of personal transformation. In the most volatile period of his life, he evolved from a self-destructive pop star into the iconic “Man in Black” -– facing down his demons, fighting for the love that would raise him up, and learning how to walk the razor-thin line between destruction and redemption. As his music changed the world, Cash’s own world was rocked by the woman who became the love of his life: June Carter (Reese Witherspoon)."

"Jarhead (the self-imposed moniker of the Marines) follows "Swoff" (Gyllenhaal), a third-generation enlistee, from a sobering stint in boot camp to active duty, sporting a sniper's rifle and a hundred-pound ruck on his back through Middle East deserts with no cover from intolerable heat or from Iraqi soldiers, always potentially just over the next horizon. Swoff and his fellow Marines sustain themselves with sardonic humanity and wicked comedy on blazing desert fields in a country they don't understand against an enemy they can't see for a cause they don't fully fathom... Foxx portrays Sergeant Sykes, a Marine lifer who heads up Swofford's scout/sniper platoon, while Sarsgaard is Swoff's friend and mentor, Troy, a die-hard member of STA-their elite Marine Unit."

Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"Good Night, and Good Luck." takes place during the early days of broadcast journalism in 1950's America. It chronicles the real-life conflict between television news man Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn) and Senator Joseph McCarthy and the Permanent Sub-committee on Investigations (Government Operations Committee). With a desire to report the facts and enlighten the public, Murrow, and his dedicated staff - headed by his producer Fred Friendly (George Clooney) and Joe Wershba (Robert Downey Jr.) in the CBS newsroom - defy corporate and sponsorship pressures to examine the lies and scaremongering tactics perpetrated by McCarthy during his communist 'witch-hunts.' A very public feud develops when the Senator responds by accusing the anchor of being a communist. In this climate of fear and reprisal, the CBS crew carries on regardless and their tenacity eventually pays off when McCarthy is brought before the Senate and made powerless as his lies and bullying tactics are finally uncovered.

"Capote" - October 16th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, October 16th at 4:30pm for "Capote" at the Coolidge Corner Theatre. Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
Just a side note: The Brattle Theatre needs your help!
"In November, 1959, Truman Capote (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the author of Breakfast at Tiffany's and a favorite figure in what is soon to be known as the Jet Set, reads an article on a back page of the New York Times. It tells of the murders of four members of a well-known farm family—the Clutters—in Holcomb, Kansas. Similar stories appear in newspapers almost every day, but something about this one catches Capote's eye. It presents an opportunity, he believes, to test his long-held theory that, in the hands of the right writer, non-fiction can be compelling as fiction. What impact have the murders had on that tiny town on the wind-swept plains? With that as his subject—for his purpose, it does not matter if the murderers are never caught—he convinces The New Yorker magazine to give him an assignment and he sets out for Kansas. Accompanying him is a friend from his Alabama childhood: Harper Lee (Catherine Keener), who within a few months will win a Pulitzer Prize and achieve fame of her own as the author of To Kill a Mockingbird.
Though his childlike voice, fey mannerisms and unconventional clothes arouse initial hostility in a part of the country that still thinks of itself as part of the Old West, Capote quickly wins the trust of the locals, most notably Alvin Dewey (Chris Cooper), the Kansas Bureau of Investigation agent who is leading the hunt for the killers. Caught in Las Vegas, the killers—Perry Smith (Clifton Collins Jr.) and Dick Hickock (Mark Pellegrino)—are returned to Kansas, where they are tried, convicted and sentenced to die. Capote visits them in jail. As he gets to know them, he realizes that what he had thought would be a magazine article has grown into a book, a book that could rank with the greatest in modern literature. His subject is now as profound as any an American writer has ever tackled. It is nothing less than the collision of two Americas: the safe, protected country the Clutters knew and the rootless, amoral country inhabited by their killers. Hidden behind Capote's often frivolous façade is a writer of towering ambition. But even he wonders if he can write the book—the great book—he believes destiny has handed him. "Sometimes, when I think how good it could be," he writes a friend, "I can hardly breathe."

"Famed graphic novelists Neil Gaiman (screenwriter) and Dave McKean (director) combine their talents to create a dazzling, imaginative creation that resembles a cross between Labyrinth and Alice in Wonderland, but is entirely original. Helena (Stephanie Leonidas), a 15-year-old girl in a family of circus entertainers, often wishes she could run off and join real life. After a fight with her parents, her mother (Gina McKee) falls dangerously ill and Helena is convinced she is to blame. She dreams she is in a strange, doomed land with opposing queens, bizarre creatures and masked inhabitants, and only she can restore the balance by finding the MirrorMask."

"The crew of Serenity takes on any job that will pay, even if it's not exactly legal. Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), the captain, was on the losing side of a galactic war, and now all he has is his ship, named Serenity, and his loyal crew: his second in command and most trusted ally, Zoe (Gina Torres), her husband, the pilot, Wash (Alan Tudyk), the mechanic, Kaylee (Jewel Staite), and the muscle, Jayne (Adam Baldwin). When Malcolm takes on two new passengers, a young doctor, Simon Tam (Sean Maher) and his unstable, telepathic sister River (Summer Glau) he gets much more than he bargained for. The two are fugitives from The Alliance, the conglomerate that controls the galaxy. He plays Elliot Sherman, the quintessential Baxter—the guy who never gets the girl. Until now. Sherman, an obsessive hypochondriac accountant, can hardly believe that he has landed Caroline (Elizabeth Banks, Seabiscuit). She's beautiful, sophisticated and on the rebound—perfect. Even so, he's still in unknown territory, and needs the help and romantic advice of Cecil (Michelle Williams) as he navigates the last two weeks before his wedding. Co-starring Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent) and Paul Rudd."

Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, September 11th at 7:00pm for "Le Monde du Silence (The Silent World)" at the Harvard Film Archive. Look for Sean wearing a nametag and sitting with his crutches in the little seating area in the lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"Louis Malle was just 23 when he was asked by author and undersea explorer Cousteau to help make a film that could act as an illustrated companion to his immensely popular book also entitled The Silent World. The film surpassed even the book in its popular impact, garnering an Oscar for Best Documentary and the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. A lyrical meditation on the mysteries of the physical world, and humankind's tentative steps to explore them, the film follows Cousteau and his crew as they navigate the oceans; the underwater cinematography, much of it shot by Malle himself, is breathtaking, the brilliantly colored coral reefs serving as a stationary counterpoint to the teeming schools of sea life whizzing past them."

"The Brothers Grimm" - August 28th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, August 28th at 6:00pm for "The Brothers Grimm" at the Loews Harvard Square. Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"Director Terry Gilliam, who brought his magical storytelling talents to such films as Time Bandits and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, sets his sights on the Brothers Grimm, turning their life into a playfully grim fairy tale all its own. Set in early 18th century French-occupied Germany, The Brothers Grimm stars Matt Damon as Will Grimm and Heath Ledger as Jake Grimm, siblings who travel the countryside as snake-oil salesmen, convincing unsuspecting towns that they are haunted and agreeing to get rid of the demons--for a price. In the meantime, they set their tales down in writing, creating a wealth of oddball, offbeat, and frightening characters. But after they are caught by General Delatombe (Jonathan Pryce) and his sidekick, Cavaldi (Peter Stormare), they are sent to the tiny village of Marbaden to solve the mysterious disappearance of a number of young girls, placing them in the middle of a fantasy world unlike any they'd ever invented. They enlist the help of a peasant woman, Angelika (Lena Headey), and they set off for the evil forest to save the lives of the girls--and themselves. Gilliam has once again built a unique, entertaining land where anything can happen, and he throws in references to such Grimm tales as Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and the Frog Prince for good measure. The movie also features Mackenzie Crook and Richard Ridings as the Grimms' cohorts, Monica Bellucci as the Mirror Queen, and Julian Bleach and Bruce McEwan as two of Cavaldi's henchmen."

Yesterday's Film ("The Aristocrats")
Sorry to anyone who showed up late to yesterday's 5:15pm showing of "The Aristocrats". The theatre cancelled the screening at the last minute due to projector malfunction, so those of us who were there decided to go out to eat first and see the next showing (at 7pm-ish) afterwards. This was actually a first for the club, and I think we handled it pretty well, but if anyone missed out, sorry!

"The Aristocrats" - August 21st
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, August 21st at 5:15pm for The Aristocrats at the Kendall Square Cinema. Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the little seating area in the lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion. Note: This is an unrated film and the theatre has stated that no one under 18 will be admitted. The subject of this documentary is one of the world's dirtiest jokes, so if you feel you will be offended you might want to skip this week (of course you are still welcome to meet up with us after the film).
"Comedy veterans and co-creators Penn Jillette and Paul Provenza capitalize on their insider status and invite over 100 of their closest friends—who happen to be some of the biggest names in show business (George Carlin, Whoopi Goldberg, Drew Carey, Gilbert Gottfried, Bob Saget, Paul Reiser, Sarah Silverman, etc.)—to reminisce, analyze, deconstruct and deliver their own versions of the world's dirtiest joke, an old burlesque routine too extreme to be performed in public. One of the smash hits of the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, this star-studded comedy extravaganza is sure to stretch the limits of its audience—particularly how loud and long they can laugh!"

"Bad News Bears" (2005) - August 14th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this August 14th at 5:15pm for "Bad News Bears" at the Somerville Theatre. Look for Audra wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"A washed-up ballplayer is put in charge of a pack of kids scarcely more mature than himself in this remake of the 1976 comedy hit. Morris Buttermaker (Billy Bob Thornton) is a former major league baseball player whose career and life has hit the skids thanks to his overwhelming fondness for booze and women. Needing a break, his lawyer (Marcia Gay Harden) arranges for Buttermaker to take on coaching responsibilities for the Bears, a Little League baseball team comprised of a handful of hapless losers. As Buttermaker tries to groom his young charges into a winning team, he also gives them a glimpse of his hard-living lifestyle while they gear up to take on perennial rivals the Yankees and their arrogant Coach Bullock (Greg Kinnear. The 2005 version of The Bad News Bears was written by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who previously scripted another Billy Bob Thornton vehicle, Bad Santa."

"March of the Penguins" - August 7th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, August 7th at 5:00pm for "March of the Penguins" at the Coolidge Corner Theatre. Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"During the harsh Antarctic winter an epic journey takes place every year. More astounding than Shackleton's voyage of Endurance, this is the story of the indigenous Emperor Penguins, who march across the harsh landscape of Antarctica to find their mates and keep the journey going for new generations. Like last year's hit Winged Migration, The March of the Penguins features astounding up-close footage of birds in action. While penguins may technically be stuck on the ground, they move with such unique grace and calm, walking steadfastly across the most inhospitable terrain, or sliding on their bellies, that you can't help but root for them every step of the way. Gorgeous cinematography highlights the vast labyrinths of ice that cover of the South Pole, and prepare to be stunned by a never-before-seen underwater sequence that shows the penguins really flying - though the freezing ocean under the Antarctic ice. Director Luc Jacquet and his crew followed the penguins on their journey for 13 months, then cleverly edited the film to tell a narrative story that brings the journey to life through clever penguin dialogue. Filled with excitement, danger, adventure, romance, and gorgeous scenery, The March of the Penguins is a real-life epic."

In addition, this is the second film in a double feature with The Dark Crystal, so if you are interested in both films, you should show up earlier!
"Oscar-winner Jennifer Connelly stars in this delightful Jim Henson film. When a teenaged girl (Connelly) thoughtlessly wishes her infant brother would just disappear, she has to face the consequences when the Goblin King (Bowie) whisks the baby away to a maze-like world populated with talking dogs, kindly monsters and Bogs of Eternal Stench. This classic children's story is well-loved by its fans for its amazing set design and thoughtful lessons about growing up. And the five David Bowie songs are just as good as you remember."

This is the true story of a group of tough, competitive, and, yes, quadriplegic rugby players who race down the court in souped-up fortified wheelchairs and slam into each other with bone-jarring intensity. The world-class athletes of Team USA are up against their toughest rival yet in a non-stop thrill ride that will leave you breathless. Filmed from a chairs-eye view, the film also shows the lives of the players off the court, for a story filled with family, revenge, honor, sex, and the triumph of love over loss.

A poetic and penetrating observation of how people struggle to connect with one another in an isolating and contemporary world. In July's modern world, the mundane is transcendent and everyday people become radiant characters who speak their innermost thoughts, act on secret impulses, and experience truthful human moments that at times approach the surreal. "A new restart of the "Batman" franchise under the helm of "Memento" Director Chris Nolan and more in tone with the early "Batman: Year One" style comics. As a boy a young Bruce Wayne watched in horror as his millionaire parents were slain in front of his eyes, a trauma which led him to become obsessed with revenge but his chance is cruelly taken away from him by fate. After disappearing to the East where he seeks counsel with the dangerous but honorable ninja cult leader known as Ra's Al-Ghul, he returns to his now decaying Gotham City overrun by organised crime and dangerous individuals manipulating the system whilst the company he inherited is slowly being pulled out from under him. The discovery of a cave under his mansion, and a prototype armoured suit leads him to take on a new persona, one which will strike fear into the hearts of men who do wrong - he becomes, Batman. In the new guise, and with the help of rising cop Jim Gordon, Batman sets out to take down the various nefarious schemes in motion by individuals such as mafia don Falcone, the twisted doctor/drug dealer Jonathan 'The Scarecrow' Crane, and a mysterious third party that is quite familiar with Wayne and waiting to strike when the time is right."

This double-barreled, action-packed documentary follows two un-sung Hollywood heros: Jeannie Epper and Zoë Bell, who have been set on fire, thrown off buildings, dragged by wild horses and hit by cars. As stuntwomen, Epper doubled for Wonder Woman in the 70’s, and New Zealand native Bell landed the coveted job doubling Xena at the age of 18. Academy Award winning director (and Boston native) Amanda Micheli fills DOUBLE DARE with star-studded interviews and rollicking live-action stunt sequences, to create a candid look at these two strong, dedicated women.

"Shane" - May 15th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, May 15th at 3:30pm for "Shane" at the Brattle Theatre. Look for Sean wearing a nametag and sitting with his crutches outside the box office about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion. This showtime is earlier than we usually meet, and it hardly qualifies as "Night", but it was the last showing of this classic film.
George Stevens' classic Western, adaptated from the Jack Schaefer novel, stars Alan Ladd in the title role. Riding the ranges of Wyoming's Grand Tetons, Shane stops at the farm of homesteader Joe Starrett (Van Heflin) just before Ryker (Emile Meyer), a powerful and predatory cattleman, arrives with his hired muscle to make the farmer a threatening offer for land that he intends to get by any means necessary. When Shane lets the cattle baron know that his gun will back Starrett if there's any trouble, the grateful homesteader offers the stranger a job as a hired hand, which he accepts. Joe's young son Joey (Brandon de Wilde) is drawn to the quiet stranger, whose difference from the men he knows is confirmed by the accidental revelation of a gunfighter's lightning reflexes. Shane becomes a valuable asset to the farm, but is slowly drawn into the continuing hostilities between the two opposing groups. To complicate matters, Shane feels an unspoken, and unwanted, attraction to Starrett's wife Marian (Jean Arthur). This creates a sense of ambivalence in Joe, whose son already idolizes the gunslinger. Stevens' meticulous artistry imbues the simple Western with the mythic aura of an Arthurian legend, as Loyal Griggs' beautifully composed images provide the canvas for career performances by Ladd, Heflin, Arthur, and de Wilde, in what many regard as the finest western ever made.

Inside accounts and controversial tapes show the unimaginable personal excesses of the Enron hierarchy and the moral vacuum that posed as corporate philosophy - and how their actions may shape our economy for years to come."

"Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" - May 1st
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, May 1st at 7:15pm for "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" at the Fenway 13. Look for Sean wearing a nametag and sitting with his crutches in the little seating area in the lobby (between the ticket booths and the video games) about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion (and I promise that this week that establishment WILL NOT be Longhorn. :P).
"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times over many years and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers.
The introduction begins like this:
"Space," it says, "is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly hugely mindboggingly big it is. I mean you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space. Listen ..." and so on.
(After a while the style settles down a bit and it begins to tell you things you really need to know, like the fact that the fabulously beautiful planet Bethselamin is now so worried about the cumulative erosion by ten billion visiting tourists a year that any net imbalance between the amount you eat and the amount you excrete whilst on the planet is surgically removed from your bodyweight when you leave: so every time you go to the lavatory it is vitally important to get a receipt.)

"Escalating events begin when African-born U.N. translator Silvia Broome alleges that she has overheard a death threat against an African head of state, spoken in a rare dialect few people other than Silvia can understand. With the words "The Teacher will never leave this room alive," in an instant, Silvia's life is turned upside down as she becomes a hunted target of the killers. Placed under the protection of federal agent Tobin Keller, Silvia's world only grows more nightmarish. As Keller digs deeper into his eyewitnesses' past and her secretive world of global connections, the more suspicious he becomes that she herself might be involved in the conspiracy. With every step of the way, he finds more reasons to mistrust her. Is Sylvia a victim? A suspect? Or something else entirely? And can Tobin, coping with his own personal heartache, keep her safe? Though they must depend on one another, Silvia and Tobin couldn't be more different. Silvia's strengths are words, diplomacy and the subtleties of meaning, while Tobin is all about instinct, action and reading into the most primal human behaviors. Now, as the danger of a major assassination on U.S. soil grows and Silvia's life hangs in the balance, Silvia and Tobin play out a gripping dance of evasion and revelation that keeps them both guessing as they race to stop a terrifying international crisis before it's too late."

Don't let the films of Danny Boyle fool you. The director of edgy hits like SHALLOW GRAVE, TRAINSPOTTING and 28 DAYS LATER isn't really a cynic, and this enchanting and supremely charming family (yes - family!) fantasy proves it. Starting anew after the death of their mother, 9-year-old Anthony and 7-year-old Damian move to suburban Manchester with their dad. It is a time of readjustment, and while Anthony is ever practical, Damian uses his imagination to create an array of companions - the Catholic Saints, whom only he can see and hear. When one day a sack of stolen cash falls to him from the sky (or so it seems), Damian decides to donate the money to the poor and help his mother gain her sainthood in the afterlife. His actions lead to high comedy, with the right touch of genuine sincerity, in Danny Boyle's first family classic.

Two friends wonder if there might be more between them when their lives both take a left turn in this romantic comedy. Terry (Joan Allen) is a middle-aged housewife and mother of four teenaged daughters and gets the shock of her life when her husband, without a word of warning, leaves them behind to move to Sweden with his secretary. Going through a bender of depression and alcohol, Terry finds herself commiserating with Denny (Kevin Costner), a former baseball star turned unenthusiastic radio personality who was her husband's best friend and a frequent presence at the house. With both Terry and Denny feeling down in the dumps about recent events in their lives, the two find themselves drawn to one another, and while Terry fights the notion of a new romance, her daughters -- Andy (Erika Christensen), Hadley (Alicia Witt), Emily (Keri Russell), and Lavender (Evan Rachel Wood) -- have different ideas. The Upside of Anger was written and directed by Mike Binder, who also plays a supporting role as the producer of Denny's radio show. - Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"The Nomi Song" - March 6th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, March 6th at 5:15pm for "The Nomi Song" at the Brattle Theatre. Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
Looks like an alien, sings like a diva - Klaus Nomi was one of 1980's most profoundly bizarre appearances. He was a cult figure in the New Wave Underground scene who sang pop music like opera and brought opera to club audiences. He was a performer with a look so strong, that his first audiences went wild before he even opened his mouth. On the verge of international fame as a singer, he instead became one of the first prominent artists to die of AIDS. But the reaction Nomi provoked was so strong, that he is still unforgettable even 20 years after his death.
THE NOMI SONG is a story of love of music and love of performing at a time when it seemed as though everyone was struck by a sense of urgency to make something (anything) simply because they wanted to make the most of the limited time they felt they were given on this earth. It's a story that grows out of a group of people who influenced him, loved him, felt pity for him or betrayed by him, yet above all, were inspired by him.
Nomi constructed his own myth out of elements so completely wrong, yet so deliberate, that it all seemed oddly possible. He was an alien amongst the outcasts, a tortured soul who also radiated optimism at a time when optimism was officially out of fashion. He was as much a genuine talent as he was the engine of his own destruction. His appeal is not easy to explain in words. He has to be seen (and heard) to be believed.

"La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc" - February 20th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, February 20th at 7:00pm for "La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc (The Passion of Joan of Arc)" at the Harvard Film Archive. This silent film will feature live piano accompaniment by Yakov Gubanov. Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the building lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
"The close-up of the tear-stained face of Marie Falconetti in Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc is one of the most famous images in all of cinema. Based on authentic records of the eighteen-month-long trial of the fifteenth-century warrior-saint in Orlians, the film brings a rigorous formal style, exquisite cinematography, and striking architectural sets to bear on the moral questions that surround Joan, her judges, and her ultimate fate. Falconetti had never appeared in films before and would never act again, but her performance here is ranked among the greatest creations of cinema."

"Inside Deep Throat" - February 13th
Join the Boston Sunday Night Film Club this Sunday, February 13th at 7:40pm for "Inside Deep Throat" at the Kendall Square Cinema. Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.
WARNING: This film is rated NC-17, and those under 18 years old will not be admitted to the theatre. Consider this and the subject of the film when deciding whether or not to join us this Sunday. If you feel you might be offended, it might be a good week to take off (of course, you can always join up with us afterwards!).
"Inside Deep Throat examines the unanticipated lasting cultural impact generated by Deep Throat, a sexually explicit film first shown in a midtown Manhattan adult theatre in 1972 that quickly became the flashpoint for an unprecedented social and political firestorm. Generally considered the most profitable film of all time (produced for less than $25,000 but earning countless millions), the barely one-hour movie became compulsory viewing for millions of ordinary Americans and celebrities, as an individual's fascination or repulsion identified his or her place in the cultural shifts of the time. Written and directed by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (Party Monster, The Eyes of Tammy Faye)"

Briski, a photographer, gives each child a camera and teaches them how to take pictures, causing them to look at their world with new eyes. Humorous and heartfelt, the film reveals the power of art and how beauty can be found in the most unlikely of places. "The 10th District Court: Moments of Trial"
This Sunday (January 30th), join the Boston chapter of the Sunday Night Film Club at the Harvard Film Archive for the film "The 10th District Court: Moments of Trial".
"The proceedings of a Paris courtroom are the basis for one of the most striking nonfiction works to emerge from the continent in recent years. Drawing from over two hundred appearances in the 10th District Courtroom, all featuring the same steadfast judge, renowned photographer Raymond Dipardon provides compelling, often humorous observations of a series of misdemeanor hearings and sentencings. Using a simple, static formal structure, he captures the subtler details of human behavior which reveal the complexities of race, class, and gender in contemporary society." Directed by Raymond Dipardon.
Showtime is at 7pm, and I will be there about 15 minutes early wearing a nametag reading "Sean". The first few people who show up will get a somewhat discounted ticket thanks to Corinna's employee discount.
